| The three-town Mad River Valley Planning District was the first of its kind (comprised of more than one town) to become a Certified Local Government (CLG) under the National Historic Preservation Act in 1988. The CLG program fosters a relationship between the local towns, the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation, and the National Park Service that provides opportunities for the Valley to become actively involved in the identification, evaluation, and protection of historically significant properties. Involvement in the CLG program enables the Planning District to be eligible for annual grants through the Division targeted for local historic preservation projects. The Mad River Valley CLG -- known as the Rural Resource Commission -- is steered by a nine-member volunteer board and has a part-time Coordinator who helps to facilitate the Commission’s goals and responsibilities. The mission of the Mad River Valley Rural Resource Commission is to advocate for the protection of the area’s historic and natural resources that contribute to and enhance its rural character, to assist the towns and organizations in protecting these resources, and to provide education opportunities for community members that illustrate the connections between rural resource protection and the Valley’s social and economic well being.
